ATKINSONS COFFEE

ATKINSONS COFFEE

This month we headed across to Lancaster to visit Atkinsons Coffee Roasters - masters of their craft since 1837. As one of Lancaster's last-standing original Tea & Coffee merchants, they've clearly been doing something right for nearly two centuries.

A PROPER BREW

We first visited Atkinsons Coffee around 4 years ago for our very first instalment of the Proper People blog, and have loved them and their ethos ever since. We see a few parallels between ourselves and Atkinsons: we both produce a traditionally crafted product that has been a massive industry in Britain for hundreds of years, and we continue to develop that product for modern people. Shoes and coffee are of course very different things, but the same philosophies are there.

They boast a few statistics that made us appreciate the effort that goes into a cup of coffee. For example, it takes ‘400 man-hours to produce a pound of [coffee] beans,’ and to learn the craft of roasting takes around 10,000 hours! It’s a few things to bear in mind while you’re waiting for the kettle to boil. Now with four shops in and around their home town, us Lancastrians are never too far away from a decent brew and a nice trip to the seaside.

A MODERN TWIST

Atkinsons realised early on that a good brew was ‘a staple that was also an affordable luxury’ and has brought that same thirst into the 21st Century. The same coffee, uncompromised of quality for nearly 200 years, but brought into modernity with the use of a delivery service to bring it straight to your front door. Everyone has different tastes, everyone has their schedules and routines, and everyone loves to embrace this individuality. A bespoke subscription to suit each person’s uniqueness is the perfect amalgamation of these things.
