Those who have followed LANX for a while now might remember that we previously collaborated with the good folk over at Brindle Distillery, home of Cuckoo Gin, making our very own small batch of gin named Leathered. (See what we did there?)
A GOOD CATCH UP
Well turns out that was 6 years ago, both businesses have grown and changed a lot in that time but always maintained their commitment to artisanal craftmanship, homegrown ideas and most importantly kept our Lancashire roots at heart. We thought now was a great time to head back to Holmes Farm and have a right good catch up whilst featuring them as the next addition to our Proper People blog.
KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY
Holmes Farm, Brindle, just outside Chorley, is where you will find Brindle Distillery. The Singleton family have been the proud owners of this working farm for over 100 years, the inspiration to add the distillery was born back in 2016 after a family Sunday lunch, aptly being washed down with a few G&T’s. 2017 saw the launch of the very first batch of Cuckoo Signature Gin. Fast forward to now and the distillery has 7 Gin flavours, 4 Vodka’s and even a Rum under their belt. They have earned many awards, including Gold at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Awards in 2019.
VISITING ‘NESTIVAL’
We arrived at Holmes Farm on a typical overcast August day, the weather might not have been bright but the atmosphere was buzzing with Brindle Distillery hosting their second ‘Nestival’. Local food vendors, craft stalls and musicians where on hand to keep attendees fed and entertained. Of course, everyone was being kept well-watered sampling the many spirits the distillery offers. (All in all a great event, be sure to look out for Nestival 2025!) Evan, our Partnership Manager was warmly greeted by Mark, Director of Brindle Distillery and promptly taken to the bar to grab a quick G&T before the chatting commenced.
THE DISTILLERY
G&T secured, Evan was introduced to ‘Maggie’ the 500 litre copper still at the heart of Brindle Distillery. Mark talked Evan through the gin making process, which starts using fresh spring water from a natural spring that resides on the farm. That together with high-quality botanicals is what really makes Cuckoo Gin stand out from the rest.
Mark then got all science’y on us as he expertly explained how gin is actually made, something to do with vapour and cooling, with a VERY strong alcohol being produced at the end, being honest it all went a little over our heads, we reckon we will stick to footwear.
From producing to bottling everything is completed in house, applying their hardworking attitude that comes from running a farm for generations. Whether it’s early starts in their fields or hand writing batch numbers, hard work and dedication is invested in every bottle.
